Admit it. Just once you would like the see their pants burst into flames. Liars. They are all around us. These days lying seems to have become an art form. Friends and family with an imaginary ax to grind. Co-workers wanting to gain an advantage. Witnesses on the stand in court. Mainstream media personalities wanting to achieve an agenda, not report the truth. Con men looking for fast and easy money. Politicians wanting power. It even extends to the highest office in this land.
God has a lot to say about lying, even beyond his commandments. In Proverbs 6:16-19, it says: There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies, and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. In the seven hateful things, lying is mentioned twice.
Liars used to be shunned and never trusted again. The problem is that liars do real and permanent damage. A person’s reputation can be trashed. His life ruined forever. A child’s college fund can disappear. His life limited forever. A family can be shattered. Split, broken and isolated forever. For nothing. For believing a lie. God says that if man refuses to believe the truth, that He will send him a lie, and he will believe that lie with all his heart. Often, a liar begins to believe his own lies. Our job is to cling to the truth and reject all liars.
